Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

What happens in therapy?
You will be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire to provide some background information. We will discuss what you see as your issues or concerns. You will find it easier to talk with a therapist, than with most other people. Your therapist will provide a safe, non-judgmental place where you will feel comfortable.

Together, we will figure out what your goals are and help you to achieve them. It may involve learning a new skill, or doing something a little different, but you will feel better.

Is it really confidential?
It really is confidential, except in a few, very specific situations. If a client is imminently suicidal or homicidal, I can’t promise absolute confidentiality. In that instance, I have to do whatever is necessary to keep you safe. Like your physician, I am a mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect, so if severe abuse or neglect is present, I am required by law to report it to Division of Family Services.

The only other exception is if you want me to report to a specific person, like your doctor. If so, you are required to sign a release of information to allow me to do that.

How much will it cost?
That depends on a number of factors. Please see the section on rates.

How long does counseling take?
That depends on what your issue is, what your goals are, and how rapidly you begin to feel better. Often, when my clients feel better, we begin to meet less often, until they are comfortable not rescheduling and just calling if they need to come in.

Many of my clients only need between two and eight sessions.
